The word “canon” comes from the Greek kanōn, meaning “list,” “rule,” or “standard.” The canon of Scripture refers to the collection of biblical books that Christians accept as uniquely authoritative. We accept it, but how do we know we have the right collection of books? Why do these sixty-six writings command our (i.e., Protestant) attention but not others? Did any other books ever compete for inclusion in the canon, and if so, why were they excluded?
